CATEGORY
This project explores the redesign of Bantry Library, reimagining it as a contemporary civic space that responds to both its historic context and its unique riverside setting. Located within the town of Bantry, the existing structure sits adjacent to the water, forming a quiet but important connection between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. The proposal seeks to enhance this relationship, creating a library that is not only a place for reading and learning, but also a social and cultural hub for the local community.
The design focuses on creating a warm, welcoming interior through the use of natural materials, soft lighting, and carefully considered spatial planning. A series of flexible zones are introduced, including reading areas, informal seating, study spaces, and dedicated children’s areas, allowing the library to cater to a wide range of users. Open sightlines and moments of visual connection encourage movement and interaction, while maintaining a sense of calm and intimacy. By balancing contemporary intervention with the character of the existing building, the project creates a timeless and inclusive environment that strengthens the library’s role within the town.

The Interior
While the exterior presents a strong architectural identity, the interior feels dated and disconnected from the building’s character. The finishes and layout do not respond to the exposed concrete structure, resulting in a space that lacks flexibility and inspiration. Despite its unique riverside setting, views are underutilised, diminishing the overall spatial experience.

Historical Context
Bantry Library is a late 20th-century civic building designed by the Cork County Council Architects Department, characterised by its bold brutalist use of exposed shuttered concrete. Defined by its strong horizontal form and deep overhanging roof, the building sits prominently alongside the river, appearing to hover above the water.
Its sculptural geometry and material honesty distinguish it from the surrounding townscape, establishing it as a standout civic landmark. The robust concrete structure and flexible internal layout provide a strong foundation for contemporary adaptation.

The Concept Model
The concept model explores spatial organisation through a series of solid and void elements, representing key programme zones within the library. The inserted forms act as interventions within the existing footprint, testing how partitions, seating, and circulation can be reconfigured to create a more dynamic and flexible environment. The contrast between solid blocks and open areas reflects a balance between enclosure and openness, allowing for moments of privacy alongside communal interaction. This model was instrumental in understanding movement, hierarchy, and how new elements can sit within and enhance the existing structure.
